Synopsis
At the age of 26, less than 3 weeks after giving birth to her first child, author Holly noticed that her fingertips were numb and her legs were weakening. In less than three days, she was completely paralyzed and could no longer breathe on her own. She was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome – a rare autoimmune disorder that occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks part of the nervous system.
Holly was admitted to the hospital, where she spent two and a half months in intensive care on a ventilator. She couldn’t move, she couldn’t speak, and worst of all, she couldn’t hold her newborn daughter. She felt like her life was over, as she couldn’t be the mother that she had always wanted to be.
In Happily Ever After, the author shares an inspiring true story of her journey with GBS and how she worked to get her life back. Join her as she shares her struggles and triumphs- in this story of courage, strength and determination. Follow her entire journey, starting with the beginning symptoms, through the many months she spent in the hospital.
Holly’s story continues on well past her release from the hospital, where she fought to regain her independence as a mother.
Reviews of Happily Ever After:
“I just received Holly’s book in the mail and can’t put it down. I have laughed with her, cried with her and relived some of what I went through with her. It is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it!” – S.S
” Holly did an excellent job of describing everything that she had gone through starting from the first signs to the very end. I enjoyed reading every page of her book because it was very detailed. I couldn’t put the book down! For anyone who has never heard of Guillain-Barre syndrome, I would strongly recommend you reading her book! It’s definitely one that you can learn a lot from! Thanks again Holly for your book!” – C.T

Hi where in Calgary can I get a copy of your book? I cam across your story on Facebook and would love to read the book and support a local mom. By chance is that the Peter lougheed hospital?
Hi Chrissi, I am in Edmonton, so it would be very cheap for me to send you an autographed book. Or you can purchase it through Amazon. I would just need you to shoot me an email at holly.gerlach@hotmail.com with your mailing address. I was at the Grey Nuns hospital in Edmonton.
I enjoyed reading about your journey it has made me think about how life is too short. I’m so happy you fought back and have a normal life. I was diagnosed in 2011 with multiple sclerosis and lost the ability to walk, drive and my husband of 23 years. Life is just not fair. I worked so hard to get back everything I lost. I want my old life back I feel punished and lost the most important person in my life. I’m so glad your husband was such and caring and compassionate man. If the roles were reversed I’d never leave my husband. My wedding vows meant something to me.
Hi Holly,
You are such a strong women. I am a nursing student in Ontario and have been really moved by your story and would love to write a paper using you as an example of maternal strengths, but first I would love to read your book!
I would love to get a copy from you and I am just wondering the easiest way to do that.
I really look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks! Madi
Hi Madi! Thank you so much! Please send me an email directly at holly.gerlach@hotmail.com
Truly touching story. I myself came down with something after giving birth to my second child. After a long two years of tests…I was diagnosed with Lupus. I’m glad to see you overcoming this. Blessings to you and your family.
I currently can not afford a book. I’d love to get my hands on it one day though. Best of luck to you.
I just finished watching your video on facebook and am completely bawling. At the age of 26 my husband was also diagnosed with Guyllain Barre. I was a month pregnant with our second daughter, and a one-year old in tow. Watching your video reminded me of everything I went through with this rare disease. Watching your video made me wonder how I ever made it through, how he made it through. What an uphill treacherous battle it was. In your video I see all these beautiful people around you helping you and your husband and your beautiful daughter and am sad to say I had to face my battle with GB on my own. I am glad you are doing well today and I hope will continue to do well. This was 11 years ago for my husband and I can report that besides lingering fatigue and the susceptability to catch anything and everything he is doing well. Keep up the hard work and I am sure to purchase your book. Thank you for sharing your story.
Thank you for sharing yours as well. I can imagine it was a treacherous battle for you as well, being pregnant, with a one year old, and not much support 😦 I am glad to hear he is doing well now. My video brings up a lot of memories for a lot of people but I think it mostly reminds us all of how far we come and how much we have accomplished!!
I had GBS at age 25 (in 1996). I got sick in June and that began my journey. After watching your video our stories mimic each other so closely. The only part that was different was I had my eyes taped shut for 2 weeks because the eye muscles were paralyzed. I also went through plasma psoriasis treatments to clean the blood. I too am back to T25 workouts. I still deal with musclar pain. Thanks for sharing your story!
I have been so touched with your story. I would love to buy the book but it isnt in english money? Xx
HI Ellie – you should be able to get it through Amazon.com? Otherwise I can also send you a copy personally! Let me know if you are able to find it or if you want a signed copy!
I saw your video on Facebook and I was educated and truly touched. I’m so happy to see you are doing well and get to enjoy your family, especially that sweet little girl. As a mother of two little girls, one still a baby, I was especially emotional to see you holding your babe in the hosptial and your husband always there. Thanks for sharing your story. I ish you and your family all the best. Joanna in New Brunswick
I just can’t get over the strength and courage you have. You are a true hero! My wife is I to fitness and is a beachbody coach and encourages me to workout and I make excuses. To make along story short, you have lit a fire in me to strive to be stronger and determined to push harder so that I may enjoy our life and children longer. Thanks for sharing your story. God bless!
Hello my name is Jesse I was wondering how I would be able to go about buying your book you’re such an inspiration you were so strong
Hi Jesse. You can get it online, (Amazon) or if you are wanting a signed copy you can get one directly from me! Please send me an email holly.gerlach@hotmail.com
How do I get your book?
Thanks so much for your interest in my book. You can get it online or I can send you one personally. I would just need to know your mailing address so I can get a quote for shipping, generally it’s about 15 dollars to the states (I am in Canada). My book is available in soft cover for $15 or hardcover for $20. Then the total cost can be either e-transferred to my email address, or sent through PayPal. Cheque is also an option but obviously takes a little longer to process the order that way. Whatever you prefer, just let me know! And if you can please let me know you want the book specifically addressed to. Thanks!
That is so awesome !! Glad to see that you are not letting Gbs hold you back. Thanks for the message 🙂
Hello your such an inspiration! Where and how do I buy your book?
Hi Jesse! THe easiest place would probably be Amazon, or Trafford. You can also get an autographed copy from me. Please contact me at my email address holly.gerlach@hotmail.com
Thanks!
